As a real estate agent, much of your day is spent alone. Real estate agents must be self-starters with a fair bit of self-discipline in order to succeed. That’s because there’s no supervisor or boss watching your every move. In fact, if you decide to cut out early, chances are, there’s nobody who’s going to hold you accountable. So how do you find the motivation you need to succeed? In today’s article from Southern Connecticut Coldwell Banker Realtor Judy Szablak and founder of Szablak Consulting, we’ll explore a few career tips for Realtors, with advice on how to find (and keep) the motivation you need to succeed in today’s hyper competitive real estate field.
Career Tips for Real Estate Agents: Stay Busy
Keeping yourself busy with lots of appointments and other tasks is important for those who struggle with motivation. Appointments are actually a great way to help you find motivation at the start of the day if you struggle to get out of bed in the morning.
By scheduling an appointment at the beginning of your day, you will give yourself a reason (with accountability involved!) to get up and going. Many find it easier to find that motivation when there’s another person — like a client — holding you accountable. And once you’re up and going for the day, it’s a lot easier to keep going.
Tips to Find Motivation: Set Goals and Remind Yourself of Why They’re Important
Learn how to set goals effectively. The most popular approach involves using the SMART goal setting technique. This will help you to establish objectives that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely.
Once you have your goals, you can develop a plan to actually achieve those objectives. This plan can help give shape and structure to your day and many find that it’s easier to find motivation when their day is well-structured.
And when you’re struggling to stay motivated, remind yourself of why those goals are so important to you. What’s at stake? Why do you want to achieve that particular objective? If you find that you’re just not motivated by this goal, then it may be worth reconsidering and reflecting upon whether that particular objective is really right for you. Would another goal or even another career direction serve you better?
Tips for Realtors Seeking Motivation: Develop a Routine
Routine is important and it can help you to “get in the groove” as you start your work day. Many real estate agents struggle with the lack of routine since each day is truly unique. But by starting your day in a particular way, you’ll find that it’s much easier to get into a good “zone” for productivity.
It’s also important to take a break from the routine to avoid burnout. Many real estate agents — especially newer Realtors — struggle with burnout because this is a career field where you can easily find yourself working seven days a week.
Exhaustion and burnout can make it very difficult to find any sort of motivation, so make it a point to take time to recover, rest and regroup. Do not work seven days a week. Whether you take Mondays off or take a couple half-days, the choice is yours. But establish limits for your time off and do not schedule any appointments during those “off” times. Otherwise, you’ll create a recipe for burnout.
