  • You must be at least 18 or 19 years old, depending upon the state where you wish to get licensed.
  • You must be a legal US resident.
  • You must complete the pre-licensing education requirements. The number of hours varies from state to state.

How to Become a Real Estate Agent: Finding an Agency 

To become a real estate agent, you’ll want to find a real estate agency. You could theoretically find an agency after you get your license, but many agencies will pay for the cost of your licensing prep course and exam fees. In exchange, you typically need to sign a contract, indicating that you’ll work for the agency for a specific timeframe or pay the balance in full. Other agencies may take the fees out of your first commission check.

For this reason, it makes sense to speak to a few agencies to see if any that you’re interested in working with are offering this sort of arrangement. 

How to Become a Real Estate Agent: Taking a Prep Course and Passing the Exam

You will need to pass a real estate licensing exam. In most cases, an aspiring Realtor will enroll in a course which will teach you everything you need to know in order to pass the exam. 

Theoretically, in most regions, you could learn the material on your own, but most opt to take a real estate course due to the sheer volume of information and the complexity of some of the topics you’ll be tested on. 

When you’re ready, you can take your licensing exam. In some states, there are multiple parts to the exam, whereas in other areas, it’s administered as one test sitting.
