Starting a new career is frightening and stressful and many new Realtors feel overwhelmed when they first get their license and join a real estate agency for the first time. So where do you start? Well, in today’s article from Southern Connecticut Coldwell Banker Realtor Judy Szablak and founder of Szablak Consulting,  we’ll explore a few vital tips for  new real estate agents who are still a bit “green.”

Tips for New Real Estate Agents: Keep the Pipeline Full

Transitioning from a regular weekly paycheck to sporadic closing checks can be a bit of a culture shock. Keeping the pipeline full is one of the most important things for a new real estate agent, as you’ll need to keep a steady work flow on your plate. This ensures that you receive regular commission checks. Some Realtors are tempted to wait until they complete a home sale before they take on a new client, but this can result in large financial gaps. Understand that you’re entering an industry with “feast or famine” tendencies.

Think of it as diversifying; it’s like putting your eggs in a few different baskets.

Don’t assume that a deal is going to close and definitely don’t make financial decisions based upon an anticipated closing. Always assume the worst and hope for the best in this area.

Tips for New Real Estate Agents: Cultivate Your Motivation

What motivates you? That is a key question for Realtors because the most successful real estate agents are individuals who are highly motivated and they know how to find motivation when they’re facing a bit of a slump.

Many real estate professionals find it helpful to write out their goals. Remember to make them SMART goals — goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based. Actively working toward goals and achieving those objectives can serve as a great motivator.

Also, take some time to write out a business plan. Then, run your dealings just as you would your own business. At the end of the day, you are your own business when you’re working as a real estate agent. You may work for a real estate agency, but at the end of the day, they’re not going to pay your bills. That’s all in your hands.

Tips for New Real Estate Agents: Take a Day Off

It’s easy to find yourself in a situation where you’re working seven days a week and while it may be a bit exciting at first, this will wear off. In time, you’ll find yourself facing burnout and some Realtors never emerge from the other side of that burnout phase. Instead, they quit and move on to a different career.

So do what you need to do to avoid burnout. Some prefer to take a full day off, while others find it helpful to work a couple half-days each week. Do whatever works for you. But do not work 7 days a week for months on end. This is a recipe for burnout.
